Thrill seekers have Skydive Moab for adrenaline fix

Thrill seekers for years have flocked to Moab, Utah, for adventure on land and on the rivers.

Now they’re taking to the air.

Moab Airport is the new home of Skydive Moab, a new venture offering beginners the chance to skydive in tandem with a seasoned professional.

To jump in tandem is to be closely tethered to the professional who handles the technical aspects of the jump.

The owners of Skydive Moab are husband and wife Clint MacBeth and Shelley White. They, along with Michael Carpenter of Skydive New England, bring almost 15,000 jumps worth of experience to Skydive Moab.

“We can’t wait to share this incredible experience with everyone,” said White. “One of the best things about taking people on tandem skydives is you are constantly surrounded by the excitement and adrenaline of new jumpers. There’s an energy in the air.”

White and MacBeth arrived in Moab four years ago to spend the off-season winter jumping. They were surprised to discover a jumping center did not already exist. They filled the void.

“We’ve come so far in a short time,” explained White. “Starting our own business has been very exciting. We’ve gotten lots of help from the established Moab business community. We hope to pay them back by bringing even more visitors to Moab looking for adventurous, fun-filled vacations.”

Skydiving is in MacBeth’s blood. It was a part of growing up. His father started jumping in 1983 when MacBeth was 5 years old. His grandfather started jumping a month later at age 60.

MacBeth’s father went on to operate a dropzone for 10 years where MacBeth learned the business. He could pack parachutes by age 11 and started jumping as soon as he turned 16.

MacBeth’s brother is an accomplished formation canopy pilot who has participated in various world-record jumps.

MacBeth has made more than 5,500 jumps in a career that has taken him all over the United States and beyond participating in competitions. His most recent competition was the World Cup of Canopy Piloting, where he placed in the top 25.

White and Macbeth met at Skydive New England when White was just learning to jump.

Skydive Moab is at Canyonlands Field, 16 miles north of Moab on U.S. 191. The center is open seven days a week 8 a.m. to sunset.
